« There is currently significant pressure on the child protection systems in many Member States. The unprecedented rising numbers of unaccompanied children and a lack of resources have led to deficiencies in some Member States’ ability to assess children’s needs, make referrals, appoint guardians, conduct age assessments, and provide assistance for family reunification In a number of Member States, reception and care are not adequate and adapted to the children’s needs. A coordinated approach between the service providers is not always in place while it would help ensuring the children’s best interest and the finding of a durable solution.
This event will mark the end of the “No Longer Alone : Advancing Reception Standards for Unaccompanied Children” project, cofunded by the European Union (DG Home affairs Directorate). The project aimed to contribute to the improvement of reception standards for unaccompanied children (UAC) and to ensure that when designing accommodation and reception conditions the needs of UAC are properly taken into account. This was done through creating a space for discussion and information sharing amongst policy makers, practitioners and service providers dealing with UAC. The study visits were an important output as they served to create the platform for discussion and information sharing as well as reaching the main target beneficiaries of the project such as EU Member States authorities’ working on reception of unaccompanied children, both at national and at local level.
In order to help Member States develop and implement good reception practices, it is important to provide them with the possibility to directly exchange experience and information on the application of existing practices and concrete ways to adapt them in their national contexts. The purpose of this roundtable is to present the five reception models/practices studied as good practices in the framework of the project and to underline key challenges and solutions.
